According to the New Zealand Institute of Geology and nuclear science, strong earthquakes have occurred in the waters north of New Zealand's North Island. New Zealand's Civil Defense Department has issued tsunami and geological disaster warning, and there are no reports of casualties and property losses.

The first earthquake occurred at 2:27 local time on March 5, with a magnitude of 7.1 and a focal depth of about 90 km, about 95 km northeast of New Zealand's North Island. Most parts of New Zealand's North Island and Christchurch on the South Island were strongly affected. As the earthquake lasted for a long time and felt strongly, many residents were woken up.

Subsequently, earthquakes with MS 7.4 and Ms 8.0 occurred successively at 6:41 and 8:28 in the kmadek islands, about 1000 km away from New Zealand. Due to the long distance, the residents of New Zealand Island did not feel the earthquake, but the Civil Defense Department of New Zealand issued tsunami and geological disaster warning again.

According to the US Geological Survey earthquake information network, the magnitude of the three earthquakes were 7.3, 7.4 and 8.1 respectively.

New Zealand's Civil Defense Department said on its website that the tsunami caused by the earthquake in the kmadek islands area may affect the northeast coast of New Zealand's North Island during the day. Local residents should stay away from the coast and not participate in any water activities.

According to reports, New Zealand's North Island railway line has been suspended operation, engineers will check whether the earthquake caused potential safety impact on the line.
